CE Certification Explained
What does CE Stand for?
A CE label or marking on a productis a declaration of compliance withthe relevant or applicable health, safety, and environmental protection legislations for products sold withinthe European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking is also foundon products sold outside the EEA that are manufactured in or createdto be sold in the EEA.
How are the Standards determined?
Clever people (some with pointy heads)have put considerable effort intoestablishing what is required to keepa goalkeeper safe. This research formsthe basis of the CE standards. CE standards for goalkeeping equipment covers: protection (so are fully impact tested),ergonomic tests (that they actually workduring the game), sizing, innocuousness(a big word meaning the materials used willnot harm your health) and what level of player the product best suits.
TYPE 2 - Personal Protective Products
All hockey goalie equipment is deemedto be TYPE 2 personal protective products and must be tested and certifiedas meeting CE standards
What sort of products carry the CE mark ?
You’ve likely seen the CE marking on items you’ve purchased from a store including childrens toys, clothing and shoes. Theseare TYPE 1 products and are not requiredto be tested and certified. However, goalkeeping equipment, required to keep you safe must be tested and certified by an officially notified body under a strict set of standards to complywith the relevant CE regulations. These are TYPE 2 - personal protective products. The CE symbol ALONE does NOT meana product has been independentlytested and certified.
How do I know if a goalkeeping productis Tested and Certified ?
Recognize CE certified garmentsby their Labels or Marks The CE symbol ALONE does NOT meana product has been independentlytested and certified. ALL goalkeeping products must be testedand certified under the regulation2016/425. This regulation along withmany other things requires that allproducts are marked in a permanentfashion with the reference EU 2016/425
Look for these references on all goalkeeping equipment. If they are not there, chances are the product is not tested and certified.
Part of CE ompliance is also correct labelling, and this is a relatively easy way to distinguish fake labelling from authentic labelling.
Here’s an example of the label or marking that should be on each product:
Every goalkeeping protection productshould always have a booklet or leaflet included explaining which class it has been certified in, the standard against which it was tested and providing maintenance / fitting instructions. There will also be either markings or labels indicating which level of protection it provides. Furthermore, a manufacturer or brand must provide a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) If a DoC is not provided you can be pretty sure the product is NOT certified. You can checkour OBO website address, www.obo.co.nz/eu-declaration-of-conformityfor the DoC; the Declaration of Conformityfor all OBO certified products.
